Ευρισκόμενη στο χείλος μιας οικονομικής συντριβής, η Ελλάδα αντιμετωπίζει την προοπτική της αποχώρησής της από την ευρωζώνη που θα είχε ανυπολόγιστες αρνητικές συνέπειες στα άλλα κράτη-μέλη. Η Ιταλία, η Ισπανία και η Πορτογαλία βυθίζονται σε βαθιά ύφεση, που εκτοξεύει στα ύψη την ανεργία. Η οικονομική δυσπραγία στις προβληματικές αυτές χώρες εξασθενεί ακόμα περισσότερο την ήδη ευάλωτη κατάσταση των τραπεζών, ενώ η αυξανόμενη δυσπιστία για το μέλλον της νομισματικής ενότητας υπονομεύει την εμπιστοσύνη των επενδυτών, που αντιμετωπίζουν με ολοένα και μεγαλύτερη επιφύλαξη τα κρατικά ομόλογα των προβληματικών κρατών. Η αύξηση των επιτοκίων δανεισμού των κρατικών ομολόγων, σε συνδυασμό με την σταθερή επιδείνωση της οικονομικής κατάστασης, ακυρώνουν κάθε προοπτική ανάκαμψης, που έτσι κι αλλιώς ήταν εξ αρχής γνωστό πως δεν θα ήταν εύκολη. Αυτή η αυτοτροφοδοτούμενη αποσταθεροποίηση οφείλεται εν πολλοίς στις «εκ των ενόντων»
